When Marvel took over their own properties in 2008 and made their first release the original Iron Man, few believed it would become the juggernaut it has. Now, billions of dollars later, they are starting Phase 2 and making the latest Iron Man movie the starting point. Luckily, The Avengers made people return to the series after the mediocre second film turned many fans off.
This time out, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) is having a crisis. After nearly dying trying to save the world, and realizing humans are not alone in the universe, he is having a hard time coming to grips with everything. The once cool billionaire playboy is now having panic attacks and determined to protect the only thing that matters to him – his girlfriend Pepper Potts (Gwyneth paltrow).
Meanwhile, a terrorist named the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) is wreaking havoc all over the world. When Stark’s mansion is destroyed and he and Pepper are nearly killed, he must don the suit once again. This time, however, it’s not for justice or to do what’s right, but for plain old revenge.
As always, Downey Jr knocks it out of the park. To see how far he’s come in just a few years is incredible. All others take a backseat whenever he’s on screen, which is fine. As for the movie itself though, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. While definitely a step above part 2, it’s great first 2/3 comes completely unglued once the “big twist” is revealed. It’s not enough to ruin the movie, but it surely brings it down to the lower levels of the Marvel universe.
I still look forward to all the future Marvel movies on the horizon, so I’ll consider this a temporary hiccup rather than a failure. Lets just hope that if Iron Man 4 ever gets made, the producers learn from their mistakes.
