It happens every year without fail. One actor or actress in a supporting role steals the movie from the lead(s) and Hollywood is very quick to make them the “next big thing”. Sometimes it’s successful, (Sandra Bullock), but more often than not it doesn’t work (Megan Fox).
Here, that actress in question is Melissa McCarthy. She was the funniest part of the already hilarious Bridesmaids and she wound up with an Oscar nomination for her troubles. On more than one occasion she has proven that she is a comedic genius but sometimes a little goes a long way. Her brand of slapstick/gross out humor is best in smaller doses, and there is enough of it here to make anyone overdose.

Jason Bateman plays Jason Bateman like only Jason Bateman can. Honestly, though, no one can play ‘straight man’ better than him. Every role he has is the same but he’s always the best part of his movies. This time is no exception.

As for the movie itself, it’s a mixed bag. The first half is actually quite funny but about 2/3 of the way through, the movie takes a dramatic turn and everything comes to a screeching halt. Sadly, I can’t really recommend this movie for anything more than a quiet night in. It’s definitely not worth a night out at the theater.
